Much has been written in the public domain about negative ions and the benefits they can bring us. Here at Universal Power, we are going to try and merge the information out there and provide you with a concise guide to negative ion energy.
The air all around us is full of positive and negative ions. But what exactly are ions?
When we speak of ions, we are speaking of an atom that has either a positive or negative electrical charge. In many ways the term "ion" is the generic term, what we should really talk about are "aniones" and "cationes". That is, negative ions and positive ions respectively.
Without getting into too deeply into the science of it all, an anion is an ion with more electrons than protons which gives it a negative electrical charge. Why? Easy, electrons are negatively charged and protons are positively charged. So if one outnumbers the other the net charge goes its way. The word anion comes from the Greek word ἀνω or ano, which means "Up".
By the same token the cation has a net positive charge because there are fewer electrons than protons. And yes you've guessed it, the word cation comes from the Greek too, from the Greek word κατά or kata and you've also guessed that it means "Down".
Marketing myth or scientific fact?
We are all aware of how we feel when we walk by the sea or are enjoying a trip to the mountains. Now all this talk of negative ions in the air, in the bloodstream, in the body as a whole, sounds like so much marketing speak for people to go out and buy products that emit negative ions.
However, this is not the case. Serious research has been carried out in the world to identify and demostrate the existence and benefits of negative ions. Or perhaps the benefits on the negative ions and the drawbacks of the positive ions.
Many people are unaware that the 1991 Nobel Prize for Medicine was awarded for research in exactly this area. To quote a small part of the Nobel Website:
What these two doctors discovered was that the cells in the human body could be influenced by the ions, both positive or negative, that surround us at any one time.
The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute has today decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for 1991 jointly to
Erwin Neher and Bert Sakmann for their discoveries concerning "the function of single ion channels in cells".Summary
Each living cell is surrounded by a membrane which separates the world within the cell from its exterior. In this membrane there are channels, through which the cell communicates with its surroundings. These channels consist of single molecules or complexes of molecules and have the ability to allow passage of charged atoms, that is ions. The regulation of ion channels influences the life of the cell and its functions under normal and pathological conditions.
So how can this be of benefit to us and what does the fabulous Universal Power hologram bracelet have to do with it all?
It is actually the negatives ions, in spite of their name, that have positive affects on us. Negative ions have no taste nor smell and they are invisible but we come across negative ions in greater density in areas such waterfalls, mountains and beaches. Since the nobel price in 1991, there has been extensive research into this field leading doctors to believe, for example, that negative ions increase the amount of serotonin in the blood. Serotonin, dubbed the "mood chemical" by many, is believed to help alter our moods and thus alleviate depression, stress and boost our energy levels.
This research led to negative ions being used in the treatment of Season Afective Disorder (SAD) with a reported 47.9% improvement for sufferers.
Michael Terman carried out the two main studies on SAD. Michael who is a professor of clinical pyschology in the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University, postulated the positive results of negative ion therapy on SAD came about because the negative ion machines used mimic summer-like conditions by supplementing the sparse winter negative ion supply.
The positive effects of negative ion treatment for suffers of diabetes is also being investigated with promising results.
Further research done by giants such as NASA into the effects of negative ions on the human body have led them to actually install negative ion generators in the space shuttles.
It is important to mention at this point that the benefit from negative ions in the air is not principally in inhaling them. Only around 15% of negative ions are taken into the body via respiration, the rest are absorbed via the skin. So placing a Universal Power Hologram bracelet on your wrist is an ideal way to receive a solid, constant dose of negative ions.
So in real terms?
It means we either go to areas where there is a high density of negative ions, such as the sea shore, where the feeling of health and exhuberance we feel can be attributed to, amongst other things, to the negative ions in the air.
Or it means we try and devise means of bringing a greater density of negative ions to us!
Given it is not practical to try and lug around one of the negative ion generators that NASA send into space or carry a tourmaline bed with us, the other solution is to wear a Universal Power silicon bracelet whereever you go.
Additional benefits of negative ions are said to be:
- Reduction in allergies
- Reduction and soothingn of migraine headaches
- Soothing of sinus problems.
- Purification of the blood (Research carried out by Dr. Takada Maku in Japan have demostrated this - he discovered that blood can purified by the presence of negative ions causing an increase in blood alkalinity.
In urban areas the amount of negative ions is around 300 to 400 per cubic cm. In mountain and sea areas this can rise to as high as 100,000. Clear, country air contains between 1500 and 2000 negative ions. The Universal Power Hologram bracelet contains 1600 negative ions!
So go on, get out there and, for a change, get NEGATIVE!
